From Ireland to the Yukon

George Brimston is one of the few people in this one-name study that I have been able to trace from the Old World to the New. He was born 10 December 1867 in Procklis, Drumkeeran, Fermanagh, Ireland, the son of Andrew Brimston(e) and Ann Boggs, and had at least two brothers and one sister. Procklis is a townland in the civil parish of Drumkeeran in County Fermanagh.

In 1901 George Brimston was in the Yukon, married, aged 33 and born in Ireland. He was a merchant and employer who arrived in Canada 1884 and had been 5 years in the Yukon. No wife or family are enumerated with him. Mary Brimston, aged 33 and born in the USA, is found on a separate census page with her younger brother and sister and her 7 week old daughter Isabella born in Dawson. Mary reported her arrival in Canada as 24 May 1899 with 2 1/2 years in the Yukon.

By 1911 George and his family are identified specifically as being in Dawson. His age and birth month are given as 43 and December, further evidence that he is the individual from Procklis. A search on Find a Grave turned up two entries for George, each with a detailed biography consistent with and extending what I had learned. George had been a public figure in his role as Sheriff of the Yukon - I refer you to Find a Grave for more details of his colourful life. George died 25 December 1923 of pneumonia, aged 56 and is buried in the Yukon Order of Pioneers 8th Avenue Cemetery in Dawson as is his son George who drowned aged 10 in May 1924.

At some point after these deaths Mary and her daughters moved to the USA. Daughter Marion was married in Seattle in 1929 to Jesse Burke Walters and they had at least one son. Mary died in 1944 in Seattle. Isabelle died in 1946 in Fort Steilacoom, Washington and is buried in Seattle.

Are there living descendants out there?
