Restored buildings in Casco Viejo, Panama City.
Since my arrival in Panama City I have made two visits to the historic district, known as Casco Viejo or Casco Antigua. Each time I have feasted my eyes on old buildings - some are fallen into ruin while others have been rehabilitated. Around every corner is a restoration project.
Some of the badly deteriorated buildings are still inhabited.
Casco Viejo is the oldest surviving area of Panama city. The original city, established in 1519 by the Spaniards, was destroyed in 1671 by the British privateer Henry Morgan (Captain Morgan rum is named for him). The city was rebuilt in a more defensible location from which it has expanded during the 20th and early 21st centuries.
Beautiful example of restoration.
Even a hint of Art Deco can be found.
Casco Viejo had deteriorated into a slum but in 1997 was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is noted for a range of Spanish, French and American architectural styles. Although bordered by a couple of very poor areas not recommended for tourists to enter, Casco Viejo has a strong police presence and is considered safe.
Casco Viejo is a work in progress.
