Looking for Doc Martin

Entering Port Isaac, Cornwall on a rainy day.

Port Isaac is a beautiful Cornish fishing village. In recent years it has become known as the setting for the British television series Doc Martin, about a skilled physician with no bedside manner, in fact no social skills whatever. The series stars Martin Clunes as Doctor Martin Ellingham, along with a cast of other actors who play the residents of fictional Portwenn.

It was a rainy day for a bus tour and, due to very narrow streets, the bus driver parked at the top of a hill leading into the village and we walked the rest of the way. Despite raincoats and umbrellas we got soaked. Fishermen's oilskins and wellies would not have gone amiss.

Fern Cottage is Doc Martin's home and surgery in the TV show.

We saw the house that is used as Doc Martin's home and surgery and the shop that is the pharmacy in the show but no sign of any of the characters. Season 7 of the program was broadcast this year and apparently Season 8 next year will be the final one.

Mrs. Tishell, the pharmacist who fancies Doc Martin, operates from this shop.

When Doc Martin is being filmed there are likely even more tourists. Then it must be very difficult for anyone to get around the narrow streets of Port Isaac. No doubt at least some local residents regret the fame their village has acquired.

Water was pouring down the streets during our visit.

One of the oldest buildings in the village is currently a restaurant.

At another café I had a tasty vegetarian breakfast.

It was a worthwhile excursion despite the weather. I enjoyed wandering and looking at the buildings and gardens.
