Savouring the soup du jour

Onion soup, cheese bread & herb butter at bijRozendaal, Enschede, The Netherlands.

When I am out for the day, whether in Canada or abroad, my lunch more often than not is soup. Sometimes it is quite ordinary – other times rather spectacular. I loved the presentation as well as the flavours a few days ago at bijRozendaal restaurant in Enschede's Museum TwentseWelle, here in The Netherlands. Eating outdoors on a sunny summer day was another plus.

One memorable soup lunch was in Courtenay, British Columbia with Jan, a former work colleague. We chose local wine, tasty vegetable lentil soup with bread, and tea. As we had more than a decade to catch up the conversation was non-stop. Another special lunch last spring was with my niece Tosca in Kelowna, BC at the beautiful Quail's Gate winery.

I felt very fortunate with my food choices the day I ate at The English Market in Cork Ireland. Good soup is often accompanied by good bread. In Ireland that will usually be soda bread either white or wheaten, which is brown.

Have you ever dined in a cemetery? At the cafe in Dublin's huge, historic Glasnevin Cemetery I enjoyed tomato soup with delicious Guinness bread made with Ireland's famous dark beer.

Carrot soup was a popular offering in the UK over the summer and I ate it at several places. At the Eden Project in Cornwall, England much of the food served in the restaurant is grown on site. Their bean soup with other veggies was hearty and re-energized me to continue my garden tour.

In my January 16, 2016 post, Eating, speaking and paying in Curaçao, I mentioned my appreciation of the zucchini soup at the quirky Mundo Bizarro restaurant and it needs to go on this list of great soup meals.

I also like to make soup and my favourite is pumpkin soup, a very flexible recipe that can accommodate other available vegetables, especially orange coloured ones. Maybe it is time to expand my culinary repertoire to some of the soups I have sampled in my travels.
