Blossoming in Japan

Cherry blossom time calls for celebration in Japan.

Cherry blossom season is the perfect time to visit Japan. An element of luck is needed though to arrive when the blossoms are at their peak as weather conditions make the timing less than totally predictable. I was very fortunate both to arrive at the right time and to have a local guide. Akemi from Tokyo Greeters was an excellent companion - friendly and knowledgeable about the culture and history. We visited Tokyo's huge Ueno Park where light rain fell occasionally then travelled by subway to a park opposite the Imperial Palace.

Thousands of people thronged to Ueno Park for the blossoms.

A place for contemplation away from the crowds in the museum garden.

Finally some blue sky to add another dimension to the day.

Moving on to Osaka I got another chance to experience the magic of cherry blossoms at Osaka Castle, again with thousands of others. Picnics with family members, friends or co-workers are an important part of the celebration.

Being under a canopy of blossoms is truly magical.

If you didn't bring your own food there are vendors galore.

I am glad I had this amazing opportunity.
