Painting power poles

Animal images, both exotic and local, are popular on Victoria's electricity poles.

Power poles are unsightly -- until they become street art. On several recent trips to Victoria, British Columbia I have enjoyed the brightly painted electricity poles on the city streets. In this story from the Globe an Mail newspaper you can read about how the pole painting project started nearly a decade ago in the Fernwood neighbourhood, where most of my photos were taken. Pole painting has since spread to other areas of Victoria. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/british-columbia/artwork-sprouts-on-fernwoods-soul-poles/article625173/

Pets appear on poles. I got dizzy walking around the bottom right pole to read someone's spiralling commentary on how dogs have shaped humankind.

Appropriate in a seaside city - fish and other sea life.

Raccoon and monkey brighten their streets.

Ornithology on display - raven, owl and even a kiwi.

Some designs are more stylized.

Painted power poles bring something unique to the streets of Victoria.
